About us

A Tremendous and Dynamic Olympic and Paralympic Sport

Judo is a tremendous and dynamic combat sport that demands both physical prowess and great mental discipline. From a standing position, it involves techniques that allow you to lift and throw your opponents onto their backs. On the ground, it includes techniques that allow you to pin your opponents down to the ground, control them, and apply various choke holds or joint locks until submission.

Providing Judo for The Communities of South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire Judo Academy will officially open on Tuesday 13th January 2026, launching our first dojo at Green Gate Lane Academy, Greengate Lane, High Green, Sheffield, S35 3GS.

South Yorkshire Judo Academy is part of the DNA Judo group; one of only three organisations in the UK to hold British Judo Association Elite Provider status. Our aim is to deliver high-quality judo in a safe, positive and inspiring environment.

We will offer weekly sessions for judoka aged 4 years through to adults, welcoming everyone from complete beginners to experienced players. Our sessions are designed to be fun, engaging and challenging, while supporting long-term development both on and off the mat.

Our mission is to make quality judo provision accessible to all and to actively grow participation in the sport. Alongside regular training, members will have opportunities to progress through gradings, additional training sessions, competitions and development courses; all supporting confidence, character and our DNA Judo motto of “Far Better to Dare.”

Quality Coaching at an Affordable Price.

Our lead coach at South Yorkshire Judo Academy is Cian Maris, a qualified judoka who holds a British Judo Association Level 2 Coaching Award. Cian brings a strong understanding of technical development and session planning, delivering safe, engaging and well-structured sessions for judoka of all ages and abilities.

Like all coaches within DNA Judo Ltd, Cian is fully DBS checked and holds up-to-date safeguarding and first aid qualifications. He shares our ethos and mission that judo is for all and is committed to helping each member develop their skills, confidence and enjoyment of the sport while reaching their individual potential.

Membership costs

Our sessions are competitive in price with a blanket monthly mat fee for unlimited classes across all our age groups across all our dojos & academies. Visit www.dnajudo.co.uk to see a list of our academies.
‘Kano Kidz’ for 4-7 years only £27.50 a month
 ‘Junior Judo’ for 7 to 12 years at £32.50 a month
 ‘Academy Judo for 12 to 17 years at £37.50 a month
‘Senior Judo’ for 18+ years and above just £42.50 per month. 
 To support families with multiple members we also offer a Family Membership Cap whereby a family with 2 or more club members will not pay anymore than £55 a month.
Furthermore you do not need to commit to buying a new kit straight away as we will lend you a suit for the first month of your membership so you’re sure judo is the sport for you!
